The word compatible in this context means the product was not made by the printer company, but by an outside source. These outside companies purchase the empty containers or cartridges and then fill them with the inks they also buy in bulk at reduced prices. This allows these companies to sell their products for only a few dollars each. There are some drawbacks to choosing the cheaper items. Ink can have different grades which affects its overall quality. Cheaper items will usually print lighter, which could give the finished image a dull or pale look.

They manufacturer a regular grade and one which is slightly less, which produces a slightly lighter print barely noticeable on most items. The difference in price between the two products is as much as ten dollars each. Lower grades of inks can be used to create satisfactory documents and projects which do not need high quality photo images.
